Release Summary

BSC v1.8.0-alpha: A Preview Release with Major Upstream Sync & Feature Removals

This is a preview release intended for developers and testnet operators, bringing the BSC client in sync with go-ethereum v1.17.3. This version introduces significant changes, including the removal of several BSC-specific features and major updates from upstream Geth. It is not intended for production use, and no mandatory update is scheduled.

Feature Removals

Several BSC-specific features have been removed to streamline the codebase and align more closely with upstream Ethereum:

EVM Opcode Optimization: The "superinstruction" feature (fused opcodes), originally added for performance optimization, has been entirely removed. The `EVMInterpreter` has been folded back into the `EVM`.
Incremental Snapshots (incr db): The unused incremental snapshot feature, including its downloader and merger, has been deleted.
Local Transaction Reannounce: The mechanism to periodically re-broadcast a node's own local pending transactions has been removed. This feature was complex and effectively disabled by default with a 10-year re-announce time.
P2P ENR Node Filtering: A redundant node filtering layer in the discovery table has been removed in favor of the more efficient dial-layer filter already present.

Upstream Sync with Geth v1.17.3

This release incorporates hundreds of commits from go-ethereum, leading to major architectural updates:

Wire Protocol: eth/70 is now the primary protocol. For backward compatibility, BSC retains eth/68. The `TotalDifficulty` (TD) field is kept in the eth/70 status packet to support Parlia consensus.
State Management: The experimental Verkle trie has been replaced by the new Unified Binary Trie (UBT).
PathDB: Introduces a path-based archive mode with proofs, enabled via the `--history.trienode` flag.
EIPs: The full set of Amsterdam EIPs has been integrated but will remain dormant on BSC for now. The scaffolding for EIP-7928 (Block Access List) has also been added, replacing the previous BEP-592 implementation.

RPC and Configuration Changes

Breaking RPC Changes:

The output of `debug_trace*` methods now strictly follows the client-wide specification: memory words and storage keys/values are `0x`-prefixed and padded to 32 bytes, and the `error` field is omitted when empty.
The `reexec` option is no longer accepted in the tracing configuration.

Other RPC Updates:

A new method, `eth_getStorageValues`, allows fetching up to 1024 storage slots in a single call.
`eth_getLogs` now has a configurable block range limit (`--rpc.rangelimit`, default 5000) and will return an error if exceeded, replacing the old `--rangelimit` toggle.
`eth_simulateV1` call results now include a `maxUsedGas` field.

Configuration Updates:

Default Cache Increased: The default `--cache` size has been raised from 1024 MB to 4096 MB. Nodes not specifying this flag will use approximately 3GB more memory.
Flags have been renamed (e.g., `--rangelimit` to `--rpc.rangelimit`, `--override.verkle` to `--override.ubt`).
Several flags and their corresponding TOML config fields have been removed, including all `--incr.*` flags and `--txpool.reannouncetime`.

Key Bug Fixes

This release includes numerous bug fixes to stabilize the Geth merge and correct regressions:

Correction of RPC regressions in `eth_simulateV1` for multi-block simulations and `eth_getLogs` for queries using `toBlock: "latest"`.
Fixes for MEV bid gas accounting, which caused invalid blocks, and a critical EVM stack-arena double-release panic.
Resolved an issue that prevented nodes from resuming an initial snap sync after being restarted.
Fixed an issue where mining prefetch rate-limiting was not working correctly due to a shadowed variable.
Made MEV per-builder bid quota admission atomic to prevent race conditions.

The incr downloader and merger, the incr freezers and the pathdb incr manager are all deleted.

The discovery table no longer filters nodes by ENR.

### Code Sync

Key changes from the code sync include:
- Wire protocol: eth/70 becomes the primary protocol. BSC keeps eth/68 for peer compatibility, retains TD in `StatusPacket`, and sends no `UpgradeStatusMsg` on eth/70. snap/2 groundwork landed, but only snap/1 is advertised.
- State: Verkle is replaced by the unified binary trie (UBT), with state readers split into MPT/UBT databases.
- PathDB: path-based archive with proofs, history index pruner, trienode history on existing nodes.
- EIP-7928 block access list scaffolding replaces BEP-592.
- The Amsterdam EIP set landed but stays dormant on BSC: EIP-7778, EIP-7843, EIP-8024, EIP-7708, EIP-7954, EIP-7976/7981, EIP-8037, EIP-7610.

### RPC Changes
- **Breaking** `debug_trace*` structLog output follows the client-wide spec: `memory` words are `0x`-prefixed and padded to 32 bytes, `storage` keys and values are `0x`-prefixed, and `error` is omitted when empty.
- **Breaking** `reexec` is no longer accepted in the tracing config.
- `eth_getLogs` / `eth_getFilterLogs`: `--rpc.rangelimit` (default 5000) replaces the fixed cap toggled by `--rangelimit`, and exceeding it returns `-32602 invalid params`.
- `eth_simulateV1`: every call result gains a `maxUsedGas` field.
- New method `eth_getStorageValues`, which reads up to 1024 storage slots in one call.

### Config Changes
- Default `--cache` is raised from 1024 to 4096 MB, so nodes that do not set it explicitly will use about 3GB more memory.
- Renamed: `--rangelimit` to `--rpc.rangelimit`, `--override.verkle` to `--override.ubt`.
- New: `--history.trienode` (serve historical state proofs, disabled by default), `--miner.maxblobs`, `--debug.logslowblock`, and the opt-in `--rpc.telemetry` family.
- Removed: the seven `--incr.*` flags plus the `inspect-incr-snapshot` and `merge-incr-snapshot` subcommands, `--txpool.reannouncetime`, and bootnode `-network`.
- Accepted but inert, warning only: `--enable-bal`, `--rangelimit`, `--vm.opcode.optimize`.
- `config.toml`: `[Eth] EnableOpcodeOptimizing`, `[Eth.TxPool] ReannounceTime` and `[Node.P2P] EnableENRFilter` are no longer supported.
